Text: In vitro allergy testing with complete allergens is used to confirm a patient’s history of allergy and determine the offending allergen or ruleout allergy with negative results (0.1-0.34 kU/L). However, increasing IgE activity of allergen-specific IgE must always be interpreted regarding the patient’s clinical history and may not correlate with the activity detected by skin testing when the patient is challenged with a specific allergen. Caution: a negative in vitro allergy test may not rule out clinical allergy or risk of anaphylaxis. In vitro allergy testing has also been reported to be helpful in monitoring the allergen specific IgE levels over time following therapy.
